Opportunities within the Lab |
|
Independent study is mechanism that gives undergraduate psychology students the chance to work in a research lab to earn course credit. Students may register for 1.0 to 3.0 credit hours per semester. For each credit hour, students are expected to work 3 hours in the lab. Students are involved in the day to day activities of the lab and participate in a variety of research projects. These experiences are quite valuable to students who plan on studying quantitative or experimental psychology in graduate school.
The Institute distinguishes between undergraduate independent study performed by first/second year students and third/fourth year students. This distinction is primarily for accounting purposes and is accomplished using different course numbers. The number for first/second year students is Psyc 2699 while the number for third/fourth year students is Psyc 4699. Both are titled “Undergraduate Research”.
In addition to the two-tiered undergraduate independent study program at Georgia Tech, graduate students also have the ability to enroll for class credit as a researcher in a lab. The number for the graduate level independent study (titled Special Problems in Experimental Psychology) is 8900. |
