Strategic adaptation in multi-task situations

Evidence suggests that people can adapt their processing strategies in response to training and practice in multi-task situations (e.g., Schumacher et al. 1999; Schumacher et al., 2001). People may begin to perform in a complicated task situation (e.g., driving) using a relatively cautious serial processing strategy, but may adopt a more daring parallel processing strategy with training, practice, or under the right motivation. We are currently investigating the nature and limits of this strategic adaptation using behavioral and fMRI techniques.
