Adaptive effects on cortical and cognitive processing of macular degeneration

Macular degeneration is a progressive retinal disease affecting 20 million people in the US alone.  It causes a loss of central vision. Patients with macular degeneration must learn to live and interact with their environment without their high-acuity central vision. They must rely on their peripheral vision and their other senses. Using behavioral and fMRI techniques, and in collaboration with researchers in Biomedical engineering and at Emory University, we’re currently investigating the effects that living with macular degeneration has on behavior and brain activity (e.g., Schumacher et al., 2008). Our ultimate goal is to develop training aids to encourage patients with macular degeneration to use their remaining sense most efficiently.
