The
School of Psychology provides graduate study
leading to the Masters and Doctoral degrees in Psychology with a
specialty in Cognitive Aging. There are also post-doctoral
fellowships available for more advance study. Cognitive Aging
involves the scientific study of cognitive processes at varying
levels of the adult life span. Although the program concentrates on
cognitive changes and differences accompanying normal, healthy
aging, there is also interest in cognitive deficits associated with
the pathologies related to aging.
The program has a clear scientific, quantitative
focus. There are three doctoral programs at
Georgia Tech:
General-Experimental,
Industrial/Organizational, and
Engineering/Applied Experimental Psychology. All graduate students
share a core curriculum in basic Psychology (required core courses
in Developmental Psychology and Cognitive Psychology) and
quantitative methodology (required courses in statistics, analysis
of variance, and regression). Students also take a required Survey
of Cognitive Aging course. After completing the core curriculum,
students concentrate on their specialty by taking topical research
seminars including scheduled cognitive aging seminars taught each
year. Through the University Center, a Consortium of Atlanta-area
Universities, Georgia Tech students are allowed to take courses at
other universities in the metropolitan Atlanta area simply by
registering through Georgia Tech.
The graduate program in Cognitive Aging is
supported by a Research Training grant from the
National Institute
on Aging. Both pre-doctoral and post-doctoral fellowships are
available to qualified students. Fellowship funding provides
stipends, all tuition and fees, research funds, and travel expenses.
Financial support is also available in the form of teaching and
research assistantships. For more information about admission
criteria, financial aid, and degree requirements, students should
